Homework - Critical Investigation And Linked Production

The Critical Investigation That Is Going To Be Researched And Analysed Is The Idea That "Is The Issue Of Obesity Turned Into An Unnecessary Moral Panic". This refers to the idea that the media is obsessed with the idea that it is not right for people to be obese and by creating a moral panic people believe there is a specific way in which people should look and how their personal image/body type should be.

Therefore the linked production that has been linked to this critical investigation is "Print Ads" linked to the idea of obesity or the correct body type that people should have. This is a good link as print ads will allow people to gain a mental understanding of what is right and wrong and also advertisements may be beneficial to people, depending on where they see the print ad. For example if the advert is in a women's gossip magazine, this may influence women to eat the correct foods or do the correct exercises.

5 Glossary Words

Gender - Physcological and cultural aspects of behaviour associated with masculinity and femininity, acquired through socialisation, in accordance with the expectations of a particular society.

Soft Focus - In Images, the use of a special lens or filter to create a hazy light around the subject. The reason why this would be useful as so that the audience can relate to to what the main subject or topic is about.

Reception Theory - Its audiences decode media texts in ways that relate to their social and cultural circumstances and individual experience. Reception theory uses qualitative and ethnographic methods such as group interviews and participant observation - Therefore interviewees and data can be linked through the print add as people are able to give an effective view on the idea of obesity.

Political Correctness - The practice of challenging and altering language that could give offense, stereotype, or exclude people because of their disability, race, sexual orientation, religion or political views. This is an important term as it is crucial that people that are obese are not discriminated through the print add.

Metonym - Part of the representational image used to stand for a whole in such a way the viewer is able to construct the rest of the story from the part given. This therefore would be a good link as it will show how people may react from the print add and how people may judge or take on board what the print add is trying to say or relate to.
