The cast of the remade version of Beverley Hills 90210
A bidding war is brewing between Channel Five, ITV2 and E4 for the UK rights to the new version of American teen drama Beverly Hills 90210.
The three channels, along with Living, are said to be the leading candidates to pick up the UK rights to 90210, which pulled in a record audience for US channel The CW when it launched on Tuesday.
90210, the rebooted soapy teen drama, which sports a new fresh-faced cast alongside original stars Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth, averaged 4.9 million viewers, giving The CW its highest rating for a scripted series. On Tuesday night 90210 beat The CW's previous ratings high, held by Smallville in 2006.
The new drama, an update of the original Fox series which aired between 1990 and 2000, focuses on the lives of rich young people in the Beverly Hills zip-code of 90210.
Usually by this point in the television season cycle, key US shows such as 90210 have been signed up by UK channels.
However, because of the American writers' strike earlier this year, production was pushed back, meaning there were few pilots for British television executives to watch at the annual LA Screenings in May.
The 90210 pilot was one of those that was not available, with only vague details of the cast released to visiting executives at the time.
However, the success of 90210 in the US has helped ignite a battle for the British rights, with the show - which appeals to the 16-34 demographic - potentially sitting well on any of the channels said to be interested.
Sources have said it would be a good fit for Five, which previously aired repeats of the original Beverly Hills 90210, and its digital channel Five US, which already air youth appeal shows such as Australian Neighbours and Home and Away.
ITV2 already screens The CW's other teen hit, Gossip Girl, while E4 has a long history of screening US teen dramas such as One Tree Hill and The OC.
Living also airs US shows such as Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice.
Sources have said that another potential home for 90210, Sky1, is not interested as the show is not seen as a good fit for the channel.
Sky1, which aired several seasons of the original Beverly Hills 90210 and its spin-off, Melrose Place, is also understood to have spent big money signing up Lost creator JJ Abrams' new science fiction drama Fringe, while it has ongoing commitments for Prison Break, Lost and 24.
One source said that offers had already been made from the UK for 90210, which is made by CBS Paramount Network Television.
"90210 will get fought for but there won't be silly money thrown at it, particularly because times are tough in the TV industry at the moment," said one industry source.
"However, there is so little product around for people who are dependent on American shows that it will get snapped up."
As well as airing in the US, 90210 has already been sold to broadcasters in countries including Australia, Canada and Ireland.
The first two series of the original Beverly Hills 90210 aired in the UK on ITV, with seasons three to nine airing on Sky1. Series 10 was never shown in the UK. Five subsequently acquired the repeat rights of seasons one to four

carstairs38's Full Review: 90210 - The FIrst Season

While I never watched the show, I was part of the Beverly Hills 90210 generation. As a result, I have always felt an attachment to those characters and followed reports of the show to see what they were up to. When the CW announced it would be updating the show as 90210, I knew I'd have to watch a couple of episodes. My interest was only peaked when I learned that a couple of the original cast members would appear as their old characters in some of the episodes. So I sat down to watch and see how the new cast developed. The Wilson family has moved from Kansas to Beverly Hills. Father Harry (Rob Estes) has taken the job of principal at West Beverly High. His wife Debbie (Lori Loughlin) is a photographer. And his kids are now students at his high school. Annie (Shenae Grimes) is thrilled about the transition since she wants to be an actress. Dixon (Tristan Wilds) is a little less excited, mainly because he doesn't want to deal with explaining the obvious adoption all over again. The kids quickly make new friends. There's fellow actress Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes), popular girl Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord), jock Ethan (Dustin Milligan), quiet Navid (Michael Steger), and semi-Goth Silver (Jessica Stroup). Together these friends will face questions of sex, drugs, pregnancy, and interpersonal trials. Will they still be speaking tomorrow?Let's start by getting the disclaimer out of the way. Like the original, this show is attempting to push the envelope as far as content goes. Sex is everywhere, some of it more explicit than I was comfortable with. Older teens and adults are the best audience for the show.As I mentioned, the season featured quite a few appearances by Kelly (Jennie Garth) as a guidance counselor at the school. Brenda (Shannen Doherty) appeared in 8 episodes, and Tori Spelling came back as Donna in two. Maybe it's my age, but I found myself more excited by the adults and their storylines than I was the teens. Okay, so that probably is a reflection of my age. But they are the main reason I kept tuning in.The show had problems from the start. Story is king. And that's not necessarily a good thing. While I am all in favor of fast moving stories, this time things progress so fast we often don't have time to fully understand the emotional impact on the characters before we've moved on to the next plot point. The emphasis on story becomes obvious when Donna shows up. It was known going in that she would only be in two episodes, yet they left her story totally hanging. Frankly, when you really look at everything that has happened in this year alone, I wonder where we have left to explore in upcoming seasons.Meanwhile, the characters suffer at the hands of the plot. It wasn't until the second half of the season that I truly felt I got to know all of them. I spent much of the first half trying to keep all of them and their stories straight. I probably wouldn't have stuck with it had I not wanted to know what would happen with the adults. The acting doesn't help matters. At times it can be quite good. Other times, it is a little weak. I think just about everyone falls victim to this at one point or another. And yet, I can't stop watching. Every week, I think about it, but every week they leave the story with enough open threads that I need to know what happens next. I will admit, I get hooked easily, and that's obvious the case here. There are signs of hope for next season. The final two episodes were outstanding. In fact the season finale was the best hour the show has produced to date. Yes, it introduced a plot point that might never get resolved, but that was my only complaint. And the cliffhanger has left me wondering what will happen next all summer. This six disc set contains all 24 episodes of the first season in anamorphic widescreen and full surround sound. Bonus features are limited to one featurette and a few cast and crew commentaries.90210 isn't great television. It's barely good television. And yet I can't stop watching. Hopefully things will improve as the second seasons gets underway and I'll feel less guilty each week as I sit down to watch.

90210 - Beverly Hills

2009 Season Finale Short Trailer

90210 Mainly focuses on teenage students attending high school as well as following their social life. This series is a spin off new series from the original TV series "Beverly Hills". Other characters that are represented are teachers, parents and family members.

Media Representations :

Shenae Grimes
'Annie Wilson'

Align Left Annie Wilson portrays a teenager whose life has changed dramatically since moving to Beverly Hills. Throughout the season Annie went through a emotional ride of both ups and downs. Her representations portrayed were mainly focused upon a young teenage girl moving into a fresh new area and high school. The main representations used by the character Annie were the control of her emotions when meeting new people and her adjustment with fitting into a new group of friends. Annie's clothing and physical appearance was also represented throughout the season as it connoted what type of personality and confidence she has. Annie's role in the program consisted of being a daughter, girlfriend, friend, sister, student, grand-daughter and enemy. Therefore there were many representations used throughout the season to connote the character she was playing in a specific scene.

Rob Estes
'Harry Wilson'

'Harry Wilson' plays a father, son, husband, headteacher and role model throughout the program. Due to the amount of positions Harry plays there are many representations used. Firstly the use of his professional clothing connotes the confidence and lack of immaturity he has. Also the importance of being a head teacher allows more representations to be used as his occupation is very important and serious. Harry has a very strong and loving relationship with both his children and wife and will do anything to make sure his family his happy. Harry not also has to look after his two children but also has a dozen of children within his high school, therefore there are many representations sued within the programme to connote how much he cares and how serious he takes education.

Tristan Wilds
'Dixon Wilson'

'Dixon' is the adopted son of 'Harry' and 'Debbie' and adopted brother to 'Annie'. He also plays a boyfriend and has very close friendships with his friends. Dixon is also very loyal and passionate towards his sports at school and also has a part time job. The role that Dixon plays represents mature teenage boys at the end of high school destined to do well in their future. Dixon also has women troubles therefore again representing teenage boys with relationships. Also the idea of Dixon being adopted enables him to have mixed emotions on thinking of his real parents. This represents the emotions that adopted children may go through.

AnnaLynne McCord
'Naomi Clark'

'Naomi' represents the typical popular high school beauty bombshell. Her clothing is her main representation as she wears a wide range of clothing that suits her personality. Also Naomi is the character that has the most history and past within the high school. She is the richest student however with no correct upbringing from both her mother and father. Naomi's lack of childhood is represented within the series and also her representation of her prerogative on boys is shown to an even further extent. Naomi loves men! Her representations therefore are very wide as her character focuses on finding the right man, however she never finds one!

Ryan Eggold
'Ryan Matthews'

'Ryan' plays a teacher in the school, that most students have personal conversations with and see him as a trustworthy friend and role model. Ryan also has love relationships within the series with different teachers and some students family members. The main representation that is used with this character portrays the idea of trust with teachers and students and also the idea that students can talk to teachers when they need to. However the idea that Ryan has love interests and seems to be a womaniser represents the mysterious and outgoing social life he lives away from educational doors.

Jessica Stroup
'Silver'

Silver's representations throughout the series differed by a margin compared to other characters. The main reason being that this particular season was focused on her emotions being 'Dixon's' girlfriend and struggling to keep up with her education. The idea of Dixon and Silver being from two different personality outcomes represents relationships that people may have be going through when their partner is the complete opposite to them. Silver in this season unfortunately turns out to have a unwell syndrome that enables her to be mental, again this is represented through her love with Dixon. Silver is also however a straight A student and is very passionate about her education and rights. Silver also is a loving friend and supports and gives amazing advice t her friends. As her character portrays two different worlds her representation of teenage girls not knowing how to fit into adulthood life is represented drastically.

Michael Steger
'Navid Shirazi'

'Navid' plays 'Adrianna's' loving boyfriend and backbone, he also plays a very humorous caring friend throughout the series. Navid's main role within this series is to help Adrianna through her pregnancy and to do whatever he can to make the one he loves happy for the rest of her life. The main representation that his character follows is someone who is destined to help and protect their friends and also a young teenage boy that is into obedient and well behaved behaviour rather than being a typical rebel. However as the series unfolds Navid finds himself going against his parents will in order to stay with his pregnant girlfriend. This storyline therefore represents the view of teenage boys not listening to their parents wishes and views.

Lori Loughlin
'Debbie Wilson'

'Debbie' plays the role of Harry's wife and Dixon and Annie's mother. Debbie's main representation focuses on a typical loving mother. However her relationship with her husband both agrees and disagrees with a typical wife and husband. The main reasons being that within their typical nuclear family there are many representation that prove that Harry has the upper breadwinner hand due to his occupation, however Debbie is devoted to her own private photography profession which therefore disagrees that she is a typical housewife. Debbie's other main representation within the series focuses upon her relationship with her children. She is determined for them to do well in school and lead the right and bright way towards their future, however she also believes that they should be free and have fun - causing strict arguments with Harry.

Jessica Lowndes
'Adrianna Tate-Duncan'

'Adrianna' plays the typical disobedient confused teenage girl. In this series Adrianna happens to be pregnant by a random school student. Navid her boyfriend has to deal with her pregnancy and lies. Adrianna finds herself changing to be a better person with Navid by her side. The main representations she follows is teenage girl being pregnant however finding her way back on the right side of the road with her friends and family's support. Adrianna's principles and problems represent situations that young teenage girls may find themselves experiencing and her character shows her the positive sides of getting through her problems rather than the negatives.

Matt Lanter
'Liam Court'

'Liam' is brand new to this series. Throughout the series the audience is determined to find out who his character is and where he came from. The main representation that is used within his character is the idea of a new student joining a brand new school with mysterious secrets in both his past and future. Liam and Naomi find themselves sexually attracted to each other but the main representation used is the idea of can he be trusted or can Naomi dig up his past. Liam represents a typical teenage high school rebel, however the audience is not to be fooled as he is a very hard working young student and a very clever A star student.

Media Languages and Forms ...
Mise en scene .. The main setting where this TV programme is set is Beverly Hills, this is known to be one of the most largest and richest places in America. The main significance of this particular setting being the main setting is due to the reason that the 'Wilson' family are looking for a fresh new start in a new friendly area. Also the area connotes that the Wilson family and members of the area are very wealthy and well mannered. Also this particular setting is always sunny, this may also connote the idea of happiness and laid back people.
Soundtrack .. The soundtrack to this TV series is very fast paced and memorable. However the advertising for this TV series influences this. The TV series is advertise by a feminine perfume, the first main diegetic sound that is used is a ladies giggle, leading into the feminine advertisement, then leading into the main soundtrack of the opening credits for the show. This may connote the feminine side of the programme as the viewers may be more women rather than men.

Connotations and denotations .. Throughout the series there are many connotations that may be enhanced by the viewers. One example would be when 'Naomi' is seen dressed in tight jeans with a half top. This may connote that she is self obsessed with her beauty as she is showing her skin and may love her outer beauty rather than her inner beauty. Her dress sense may also connote that she likes attention from people as she would expect people to notice her dress sense. An example of a denotation may be when 'Ryan' asks specific students to stay behind after class for a word. This denotes that he is very concerned with students and denotes his respect and concern he has with students and his ambition to make them to do an extra step better in their education.

Narrative ...
The narrative is organised and structured in a very confusing matter due t the reason that it is a spin off from the original Beverly Hills TV series. The narrative however is structured very easily and comfortable as the narrative opens up by revealing the past and present and introduces each character in order for the audience to understand who is who. The audience therefore are positioned in order to understand the reason to why the 'Wilson' family have moved to Beverly Hills, and also what this particular family has in store for them. The narrative unfolds when Dixon and Annie arrive to their new school that their dad will be in charge of. They both gain the same friendhsips and seem to be getting on very well within their new friends. The heroes and villains however are not unfolded until mid way trough the season, when Annie and Naomi start to ague and fight over boyfriends. The main use of alienation that is used within this TV series can be the idea of love relatinsohips being more important than education when in high school.
Genre ...
The Genre for 90210 is "Teen Drama". The main generic conventions that prove that this TV series is a teen drama, is the main fact that most of the narrative consists of teenagers, and also most story lines within the series focus on typical teenage drama in everyday life. For example house parties, drinking alcohol and smoking. The characters in this series are generically determined as most of them live up to their stereotypes by drinking and smoking and disobeying their parents commands. Also the idea f being rebels is used. However the series of the generic expectations are not completely fulfilled as some characters do listen to their parents and don't follow the crowd.
Institutions ..
The main channel and original channel that 90210 was broad casted on is "The CW". This is an American channel like E4 that shows teenage dram type of programmes. The channel that this show is broad casted on in England is E4. The main motive of The Cw is appeal to women 18 to 34-years-old. Therefore the show indicates that the series appeals to this type of audience.

Media Audiences..

The main target audience for 90210 is women 16 to 40 years old. The main reasons being because women may relate to the character that Debbie plays and how it is as mother to control your teenage son and daughter. Also parents that have adopted may be influenced by the show as the series consisted of two adoptions. Also due to the reason that this programme is a spin off to the legendary Beverly Hills this may attract a wider range of audicne as they may compare the old and new versions. My overall view on this programme and my evaluation of the TeX is that it portrays wide range of different perspectives of teenage life and growing up in high schools and what peer groups can do the individuals. The show also shows the importance of family life and also influences people to live life and enjoy it to the best of your ability.
